Oracle Cloud World 2024: Key Takeaways for Data Enthusiasts

In addition to catching up on all things Oracle, Oracle CloudWorld was the place to gain actionable insights and strategies to embrace AI while transforming your business to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving market.
For me, the big announcement was the addition of vector capabilities to Oracle Database 23ai and HeatWave. I had first-hand experience with HeatWave as I was at the AMD booth demonstrating its strong vector capabilities and phenomenal performance.
Why Vector Databases?
Conventional databases lack the structural capability to accommodate imprecise comparative inquiries such as “which items are comparable to this one?”. Vectors emerged to address these new issues, much like the NoSQL generation of databases did for handling unstructured data. User inquiries evolved in tandem with the influx of machine representations of data. To address these inquires, vector databases, a novel technology, was required.
Traditional search methods rely on keywords, but vector search takes a more nuanced approach, allowing users to search based on meaning, not just individual words. This is made possible by leveraging machine learning models called encoders, which enable powerful results by capturing the semantic relationships between data points. At the heart of vector search are embeddings, which transform text, audio, and images into numeric strings called “vectors”. These high-dimensional arrays possess semantic meaning, making data available to artificial intelligence (AI) and unlocking a wealth of possibilities.
Vectors in Oracle Database 23ai
Oracle Database 23ai with built-in vector capabilities offers several benefits, including semantic understanding, scalability, and flexibility. By capturing the meaning behind data, vector enables users to find relevant results that may not have been possible with traditional keyword-based searches. Additionally, Oracle Database 23ai vector is highly scalable, allowing it to handle large volumes of data with ease. Perhaps most importantly, vector search is incredibly flexible, as anything can be vectorized – from text and images to audio and more. This flexibility opens up new possibilities for search and discovery, enabling users to uncover insights and relationships that may have gone unnoticed with traditional search methods.
Oracle Database 23ai vector has numerous applications across various industries and business functions, including education, supply chain management, research and development, finance, marketing, healthcare, insurance, and law. Some impressive use cases, such as at PayPal, were on display at CloudWorld.

HeatWave
Oracle announced enhancements to its HeatWave managed data analytics and database service, including new generative AI features. HeatWave GenAI now supports multilingual applications, batch processing for LLM inference, optical character recognition (OCR), JavaScript, and automatic vector store updates. These features enable developers to create globally accessible applications without data migration or additional costs. HeatWave demonstrated some impressive price-performance results for similarity search compared to Snowflake, Databricks, and Google BigQuery, as shown below.

Oracle Database@AWS
A major strategic announcement—Oracle’s partnership with AWS—follows on the company’s announcements regarding similar partnerships with Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Oracle is collaborating with AWS to provide database services on the latter’s data centers as part of its ongoing efforts to assist businesses in making the switch to the cloud.
Enterprise users will be able to access Oracle Autonomous Database on dedicated infrastructure and Oracle Exadata Database Service running on Exadata and OCI in AWS data centers thanks to a new offering introduced at CloudWorld 2024: Oracle Database@AWS which will start deploying in December 2024. simultaneously, Oracle will also be expanding across new cloud regions at Google and Microsoft. Oracle is a bellwether for the industry so we can clearly say the world is multi-cloud now and act accordingly.
For users of AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure as well as Oracle clients, this multi-cloud growth offers enormous advantages. The company is giving organizations more freedom by making Oracle’s capabilities available everywhere. This allows them to take use of Oracle’s high-performance database cloud solutions while protecting their investments in other cloud providers.
Increased flexibility, creativity, and scalability are brought forth by this relationship. What also should capture the interest of the data professional is the announcement of plans to expand the Fusion Data Intelligence service, a part of the Fusion Cloud Applications Suite, with a new generative AI-powered developer assistant. Fusion Data Intelligence combines enterprise data, AI models, and analytics to provide corporate intelligence. The AI-powered developer assistant will help developers in adding third-party data sources and configuring the service. Fusion Data Intelligence will also enhance AI and machine learning capabilities in Fusion Cloud Applications.
Agents have become a hot topic over the last few months. Oracle introduced 50+ AI agents powered by the latest innovations in generative AI, across ERP, HCM, SCM, and CX. These agents will enable customers to fully automate end-to-end business processes while also delivering personalized insights, content, and recommendations in support of specialized user roles.
